'Analysing the Competition'

In this assignment I will be using BARB through comparing three shows that are currently on TV similar to mine, as this will include of a similar content and target audience. Each of these shows will be drawn from different channels.

Show one;
The title of this show is called 'Zombie flesh eaters' which is a documentary film that is shown on the horror channel. Due to the channel it is show on the target audience for it determines the broadcast time as it is shown at 09.00 pm. As the horror channels target audience is aged around 18+ which is similar to my target audience.The shows viewing figures for the past week is 34,000 thousand viewers. From the viewing figures this enables me to see that the channel has an impacts on the audience due to it not being mainstream as well as the timescale of the broadcasting time. Some of the similarities the shows format content has with my own is the zombie based topic. However the comparison between my initial idea and zombie flesh eaters has a slight difference due to it being a film rather than a documentary as we can their is no presenters, narrative or interviews. As my documentary will include of all three realism, narrativisation and dramatizations, Zombie flesh eaters only contains dramatization due to it being fiction and subjective as this is done purely for entertainment purposes. Whereas my documentary will include of  both facts and opinion. In terms of my show this will effect the viewing figures  comparing to this show 'Zombie flesh eaters'as my documentary will be shown on a popular televsion channel BBC Three which is specificily aimed to a specific audience from 16-30 which is effectient as my target audience is aimed to 16 to 24 year olds. I also believe that the figures will increase as there are repeats which will enable the individuals to access BBC Three channels as it is mainstream, as the horror channel is not accessible to those without Sky, BT or other boardbrand boxes. Another reason why it may beat these viewing figures is due to my documentary being a niche market this will attract audiences as a result of a zombie apocalypse show, shown on BBC Three.

Show two;
The title of this second show is called 'In the flesh' shown on BBC Three. The timing of this show is shown at
09.00 pm, due to the nature of the documentary soap this timescale is appropriate, as it is aimed to a target audience ranging from 16-28 year olds. The shows viewing figures for the past week is 700,000 thousands views. Some of the similarities with the shows content is that it is based on a reenactment mimicking a zombie apocalypse that contains individual that have caught an infectious virus. However the format with the show and my documentary is different as it is not a magazine show it does not include any realism or narrativisation. The format of the layout will be different however I will include dramatisation in order to make it entertaining so the layout will be similar due to the fiction side of the documentary. My show may beat 'In the flesh' viewing figures due to the hour eariler timing as well as it being shown on the weekend which enables my target audience to watch it as many of the targeted audience will be at home due to it being shown one prime time hours. The signifcant of my documentary being shown on BBC Three will impact the statical viewing figures as that channel is specific aimed to a younger audience ranging from 16-33. As my documentary has not been done before on the BBC Three channel I will be including a range of realism and narrative to help engage and retain the audience whilst watching the documentary.

Show three;
The title of the third show is called 'Mythbusters: zombie special' shown on the discovery channel. The broadcasting time for Mythbusters is shown at 07.00 pm. Due to some of the graphic images of  frightening zombies the timescale is based on the content of the show. The shows viewing figures for the past week had sixty thousand views. Some of the similarities with the shows format and content is based on the zombie topic which they research information based on that topic to see whether the main subject of the show is a myth or factual. As Mythbusters are also a documentary magazine show the format of it being based on a participatory mode the comparisons between my documentary and this show are the presenter who take part within the show as well as the consent summary (narrative) with what is going on. My documentary may beat this shows viewing figures as it will be on a mainstream channel that will engage more of my target audience as the discovery channel is slightly more difficult due to it not being mainstream as this is also not a channel really targeted towards an audience age range 16-24. This will impact the viewing figures  for my documentary on BBC Three as more people will be able to view and access the channel.

A summary based on the reasearch that I have gathered overall the most effective day and boardcast time according to BARB what best suit my documentary magazine show from 08.00 pm on a Saturday. The reasons for this is due to my documentary being a stand alone show where no follow will occur, this enable me to engage my audience through the time and day as most of  my target audience I have asked whether they would perfer to watch a documentary on the weekend. The information I have garthered from barb show that documentaries such as 'In the flesh' have a successful viewing figures due to the day as this will enable me to gain as much views from my target audience as possible.
