'Final Proposal'

In this section of the assignment I will be outlining my documentary's aims, content, target audience, format, genre and style.
Aim:My documentary aim is to inform my target audience about the possibility of a zombie apocalypse occurring in the future. However this documentary is purely based on how realistic it actually is as a raise of interest for zombie has opened, this niche market will allow me to gain knowledge myself as well as my audience. During my production I will make sure all individuals are only shown within my documentary if I have their permission as their privacy will be respected.
Content:The content of my documentary I will be including a variety of object (fasts) and subjective (opinions) information throughout my documentary in order to ensure a balance to prevent my zombie show from being biased. The people who I will be interview are related to my topic in one way or another as this will range from vox pops, zombie experts and doctors/science consultants. I will be also giving relevant updates such as summaries to keep my target audience update so they are able to follow as this will enable me to attract and retain viewers. I will also make sure all content include in my documentary is truthfully and accurate.
Target Audience:My target audience based on my documentary is aimed to British individuals; both genders, all races who are aged from sixteen to twenty four years. I will try my best to encourage and interest my target audience through making it humorous, entertaining and educational. As my audience appeals to under 18's I will need to make sure all guideline are followed correctly to protect the audience aged 16-17 years.
Format:The format of my documentary will have a mode which participatory. This will include a presenter who will be taking part during the production process of my documentary however they are not the main subject. My presenter will not influence any of the information told to my audience as they will be asking the essential questions which is based on my aim. Therefore will allow my target audience to create their own judgement on is shown to them as my presenter will state her opinion once the documentary has come to the end. Each situation will have a necessary purpose within my documentary due to it playing out similar to existing participatory mode in today's magazine shows.
Genre:
My genre will be a documentary as this will be a factual television programme. The structure will be set out as a documentary through realism, narrative and dramatisation included rather than an exact magazine show where games and competitions are commonly included. This will allow me to get straight to the point as my documentary will include a variety of interviews- subjective and objective views, videos and images.
Style:
Throughout my documentary will have a range of styles containing the; camera work, editing, graphics and sound. As I will be filming my documentary in different locations to make it interesting and engage my audience throughout as well as different camera movements, voice overs, green screens and back ground music. This will enable me to make it different and entertaining due to the dramatisation include. A similar documentary I will be trying to imitate will be something like vice documentaries which are mainly participatory and include of all realism, narrative and occasionally dramatisation.

Camera work- When filming during my production process I will make sure a variety of shots are used for example close up to view as individual facial expression so my audience are aware of how each subject is feeling as this will enable them to create their own impression of what they see. Another example will be mid shot as well as establishing shot in order to gain a sense of realism as the camera will be at eye level throughout.
Graphics- I will be using graphics during the post-production stage as a part of the editing this enable me to add another way of getting the information gathered across as well as used to state each sections of the documentary and credits at the end of the show.
Editing- The editing process enable me to include different effects and style to the overall documentary for the entertaining purpose of it as this will allow me to enagage them through a creative flair ranging from transitions to cuts, videos/images and many more.
Sound- The sounds used within my documentary will range from both digetic and non digetic sound such as music, voice over, speaking during interviews and other sounds that might be heard on the camera which adds realism to it overall.

'Analysing the Competition'

In this assignment I will be using BARB through comparing three shows that are currently on TV similar to mine, as this will include of a similar content and target audience. Each of these shows will be drawn from different channels.

Show one;
The title of this show is called 'Zombie flesh eaters' which is a documentary film that is shown on the horror channel. Due to the channel it is show on the target audience for it determines the broadcast time as it is shown at 09.00 pm. As the horror channels target audience is aged around 18+ which is similar to my target audience. The shows viewing figures for the past week is 34,000 thousand viewers. From the viewing figures this enables me to see that the channel has an impacts on the audience due to it not being mainstream as well as the timescale of the broadcasting time. Some of the similarities the shows format content has with my own is the zombie based topic. However the comparison between my initial idea and zombie flesh eaters has a slight difference due to it being a film rather than a documentary as we can their is no presenters, narrative or interviews. As my documentary will include of all three realism, narrativisation and dramatizations, Zombie flesh eaters only contains dramatization due to it being fiction and subjective as this is done purely for entertainment purposes. Whereas my documentary will include of  both facts and opinion. In terms of my show this will effect the viewing figures  comparing to this show 'Zombie flesh eaters'as my documentary will be shown on a popular televsion channel BBC Three which is specificily aimed to a specific audience from 16-30 which is effectient as my target audience is aimed to 16 to 24 year olds. I also believe that the figures will increase as there are repeats which will enable the individuals to access BBC Three channels as it is mainstream, as the horror channel is not accessible to those without Sky, BT or other boardbrand boxes. Another reason why it may beat these viewing figures is due to my documentary being a niche market this will attract audiences as a result of a zombie apocalypse show, shown on BBC Three.
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-top-10?

Show two;
The title of this second show is called 'In the flesh' shown on BBC Three. The timing of this show is shown at
09.00 pm, due to the nature of the documentary soap this timescale is appropriate, as it is aimed to a target audience ranging from 16-28 year olds. The shows viewing figures for the past week is 700,000 thousands views. Some of the similarities with the shows content is that it is based on a reenactment mimicking a zombie apocalypse that contains individual that have caught an infectious virus. However the format with the show and my documentary is different as it is not a magazine show it does not include any realism or narrativisation. The format of the layout will be different however I will include dramatisation in order to make it entertaining so the layout will be similar due to the fiction side of the documentary. My show may beat 'In the flesh' viewing figures due to the hour eariler timing as well as it being shown on the weekend which enables my target audience to watch it as many of the targeted audience will be at home due to it being shown one prime time hours. The signifcant of my documentary being shown on BBC Three will impact the statical viewing figures as that channel is specific aimed to a younger audience ranging from 16-33. As my documentary has not been done before on the BBC Three channel I will be including a range of realism and narrative to help engage and retain the audience whilst watching the documentary.
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-top-10?

Show three;
The title of the third show is called 'Mythbusters: zombie special' shown on the discovery channel. The broadcasting time for Mythbusters is shown at 07.00 pm. Due to some of the graphic images of  frightening zombies the timescale is based on the content of the show. The shows viewing figures for the past week had sixty thousand views. Some of the similarities with the shows format and content is based on the zombie topic which they research information based on that topic to see whether the main subject of the show is a myth or factual. As Mythbusters are also a documentary magazine show the format of it being based on a participatory mode the comparisons between my documentary and this show are the presenter who take part within the show as well as the consent summary (narrative) with what is going on. My documentary may beat this shows viewing figures as it will be on a mainstream channel that will engage more of my target audience as the discovery channel is slightly more difficult due to it not being mainstream as this is also not a channel really targeted towards an audience age range 16-24. This will impact the viewing figures  for my documentary on BBC Three as more people will be able to view and access the channel.
http://www.barb.co.uk/viewing/weekly-top-10?

A summary based on the reasearch that I have gathered overall the most effective day and boardcast time according to BARB what best suit my documentary magazine show from 08.00 pm on a Saturday. The reasons for this is due to my documentary being a stand alone show where no follow will occur, this enable me to engage my audience through the time and day as most of  my target audience I have asked whether they would perfer to watch a documentary on the weekend. The information I have garthered from barb show that documentaries such as 'In the flesh' have a successful viewing figures due to the day as this will enable me to gain as much views from my target audience as possible.

'Secondary Research - 5 Questions'

In this section I will be researching a minimum of five questions which I will hope to use within my documentary.
Who, What, Why, When, Where and How.

1) Who came up with the creations of zombies and where did they originate from? The creator of the animated fictional characters of 'zombies' is difficult to pin point to a certain individual but from the research I have gathered I am able have am idea of where the "infectious dead humans rise" in order to take revenge on mankind. Some stories are subjective from the ancient tribal people of West Africa/Haiti. Haitian folklore relates zombies with witch craft as they are individual who believe have unfinished business that needs to be completed. The mythology origin of zombies have developed dramatically in today society from spirit to a virus infection, impacted by the media through misleading films and television programs.
This will help me to develop my idea for my documentary as I will use this for a basic guideline then try relate all the information I receive from each interviewees on who it has developed in time comparing to the mythological creature in the early 1900's. During the start of the documentary I will give an introduction based on a summary of 'who and where' to engages my target audience within the first minute as they may not have the knowledge this will enable them to have a rough idea of what the documentary will include.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie
2) How realistic is a zombie apocalypse? During my research on how realistic a zombie apocalypse is I found out how possible it could be to occur some factors of this range from; brain parasites, neurotoxins, the real rage virus, neurogenesis and finally nanobots. The facts of scientific evidence suggest it could happen through the brain sending different signals that effects mentality. All of these proofs have been dramatised in order for film and game purposes, however scientists have claimed to cause and produce these viruses that cause a zombie like creation. Another believe is based on evolution where humans have developed significantly due to nano robots keeping a person who has died living through in the brain as connections and signs are send throughout the body to keep it up and moving. The result of this virus in an apocalypse is believed to end human existence by eating their flesh or also catching the virus.
The information that I have gained from the secondary source will allow me to develop different individual opinions for example 'vox pops, the presenter and experts'. As this will enable my target audience to create their own judgement on the topic.
http://www.cracked.com/article_15643_5-scientific-reasons-zombie-apocalypse-could-actually-happen.html
http://zombieapocalypseacademy.org/history-of-a-zombie/
3) What possible protection do we have in case of this situation does occur? Based on my topic questions how realistic it actually is the facts and opinions received will impact the protection we have in today society as research states that the top 10 ways to help prevent and protect individuals from zombie are; changing their homes to a remote location where individuals are not in danger from a potential virus, build doors and walls out of wood and metal, have weapons ready, create traps, sound diverastion and more including running. However for the government section their is no protection in place for an invasion but if it does occur it is likely for the services to treat this similar to a terrorist attack in the sense of lock down.
This will develop my documentary through reassuring the audience is an humours way in order for the dramatisation/ entertain side of the idea, as when interviewing the expert I have for the security measures I will be able to link back to the secondary information I have gathered so far.
http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/26918/10-ways-to-protect-your-home-from-zombies/
4) Why would a zombie invasion happen? Some reasons of why it could happen could range from virus infections which affect the most important organ function which is the brain. However due to new studies there are drugs that create a similar zombie like factors which is to do with the brain giving signals to the rest of the body. This drug 'Bath salts' contain substitude cathinone, that have effects similar to amphetamine and cocaine. Some of these side effects of the drug range from excessive anger, paranoia, psychosis, agitation and even eating human flesh! Due to the drug becoming more and more popular this is result in serve injuries, incidents and even death. As a result of this many more individuals are willing to try create an invasion themselves to minick the undead. The research I have found out would allow me to develop my documentary through interviewing medical professionals on the danger these drugs have on the human body and what permenant effects are there too. This would also allow me to create a summary of all the different potential hazards that could be prevented and gain opinions of individual as this will as me to create a balance throughout the documentary.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_salts_(drug)
http://rt.com/usa/drug-bath-salt-zombie-321/
5) When is it believed for the zombie apocalypse to occur? There are many opinions on when an apocalypse could occur in the future but the timing is unsure. However some opinion stated on the internet suggest that scientists could possibly cause this apocalypse to occur through the medical side of creating a virus through injecting it into the body of individual to create a zombie like creation. This a done by scientists shutting down specific parts of the brain which signals the rest of the body react in a way which effect the body overall, for example similar to the bath salt drugs. Through this research I found out that this would take a very long time to produce enough viruses to effect the whole universe. This information will allow me to develop my documentary on how realistic it is through the timescale of when it could actually happen this will allow me to add people opinion on it.

'Documenting Documentaries'

In this assignment I will be defining each of Nicholls modes; The Expository Mode (voice of god), The Observational Mode (window on the world), The Participatory Mode (also called interactive), The Reflexive Mode (awareness of the process) and The Performative Mode (filmmaker as participant). Also explaining how and why conventions, realism, dramatisation and narrativisation are used.

The Expository Mode (voice of god):
The expository mode is when the producer interprets how they would like the audience to view the documentary, as it is emphasized through verbal commentary known as 'voice over' and argumentative logic by using a narrator. The logical argument is used help the audience understand something for example whether it may be common sense (cant argue with the logic), as this is answered by an direct response/address used by News reports as if the audience in front of them.
An example of this mode within a documentary I have used  is Victory at sea, as the narrator is not physically shown within the documentary as only the voice is heard mimics the 'voice of god' (not literally, metaphorically) we can hear this straight away at (1.40). As we can see the archive footage and image within the documentary with a narrative explaining each point helps the audience interpret the mode by focusing on the facts rather than showing the filmmakers opinion through subjectivity rather than objectivity. Some examples of conventions used within the documentary range from a slow pace editing montages, constructing a version of reality often using narrative techniques and archive footage. The producer of the documentary is trying to achieve an objective feel through the facts shown throughout enabling the audience to create their own personal opinion on what is being shown to them however with this documentary the filmmaker selects which sections they choose to show the audience. The documentary producer uses narrativisation in the documentary through aspects of narrations and narrative techniques throughout. These convention help build the story line effectively by the use of suspense and concealing the outcome until the very end, this is done in order to the facts accurately. As this helps the viewers understand exactly what is going on rather than just viewing footage unaware of what is going on through the direct address and preferred reading.

The Observational Mode (window on the world):
The observational mode is when the producer tries to capture as much footage (archive) as possible in order to observe the situation as the filmmaker is the neutral observer mimicking a fly on the wall as nothing is staged or scripted. This mode first emerge in the late 1950's to early 1960's.
An example of this mode within a documentary is 'Celebrity Big Brother' as the filmmaker in this case remains hidden from behind the camera throughout the footage as they do not influence or change the event that is being recorded. At (1.00) the audience is shown what each contestants is doing within the house to help capture the sense of realism throughout the documentary. The documentary producer uses realism through the use of conventions such as close ups to view the expression of each house mate to make the audience aware of what the atmosphere is like. Disjoint editing is used to capture different sections of the event as no voice over or presenter is used. However this is used in order  for entertainment purposes to help keep the audience focused and interested in each story line shown through a chronological order. The producer of the documentary is trying to achieve a truthful and realistic documentary without adding any subjectivity as this allows the audience interpret the mode to be accurate through the use of balance and is also unbiased as it shows each side of an argument or discussion. As the filmmaker has not used  narrative or dramatisation in the documentary. Which we can see at (9.20-10.10) the conversation has no been selected by the producer but by the constants shows the realistic nature of a conversation.

The Participatory Mode (also called interactive):
The participatory mode is when the filmmaker of the documentary is filmed but is not the main focus or subject throughout the documentary. However the filmmakers events and actions being recorded are acknowledged throughout the documentary.
An example of the participatory mode I have used within a documentary is 'Kingdom of the Little People'. Throughout the documentary we can see direct engagement between the filmmaker and the subject which we can see at (3.01) the presenter uses direct interaction with each of the main characters. The presenter is continuously shown in every shot this enable the audience to see the reaction of the presenter to create their own impression on the situation.  However in this mode the presenter states her personal opinion on the kingdom of little people at (0.59) as the 'run down abandoned theme park' had made her feel uncomfortable. The documentary producer uses narrativisation as the presenter talks through what is happening during that present moment as helps the audience to understand as well as the story line developing through the voice over. However the direct response of the main subjects adds to the realism as they are being themselves as what is being said is not scripted or staged in any way. Dramatisation is also used by the producer through the music and graphics for entertainment purposes which engage and interest the audience as we can see (2.10) which includes some humorous aspects. Some of the conventions used in this documentary are interviewers and framing as this normally done with someone who is related to the event and in this case it is the adults suffering from dwarfism informs the audience what life is like at kingdom of the little people, (3.30) and (5.56).

The Reflexive Mode (awareness of the process):
The Reflexive mode  is when the constructed nature is being acknowledged within the documentary and flaunts it conveying to the audience that this is true but not necessarily the exact truth as this is done through reconstructions of the event or situation.
The example I have used for reflexive mode is 'The man with the movie camera (1929)' is based on filmmaker recording events with his camera as the artifice of the documentary is exposed as the audience are made aware of editing, sound and recording. As this is a constructed the documentary process  becomes biased and exposed as the techniques are not the truth but are true. In this documentary the producer uses both realism and dramatisation throughout but narrative is not used as there is not chronological order of a story line nor a presenter or a voice over. The realism shown within the documentary are people practicing chores, packaging goods (at work),  at the beach and more which we can see at (1.01.49), as this is a reconstruction no cliff hangers or suspense is used. Dramatisation is also used within the documentary for audience entertainment purposes for example the instrumental background music is played throughout the video to engage and interest the audience which we can hear straight away at (0.01). The type of technique impacts the audience as they are able to recognise what life was like slightly in the 1929 era. Some conventions used is the editing quite fast paced as well as archive footage which is shown throughout the documentary.

The Performative Mode (filmmaker as participant):
Performative is when the filmmaker within the documentary gets involved within the event or situation taking place as this emphasizes the subjective nature of the documentarian as well as acknowledging the subjective reading of the audience. As notions of objectivity are replaced by emotion and affect.
The example of a documentary that I have used for performative mode is 'Undercover Boss US', this is a good example of this mode due to the emphasise of emotion and social impact on the audience towards the end where suspense is built. At (33.48) the boss reveal enable to the viewers to see how they felt rather than being objective,  this mode is very similar to the participant mode as this is not staged or scripted. The documentary filmmaker is the main subject at this point as there experience includes of a emotion response which we can see at (35.10). The documentary producer uses dramatisation for entertainment purposes at (1.57) we are able to hear music, fast paced editing and graphics also including close ups of the performance engages the audience. However realism and narrative is also used to represent the real life employees of the organisation and making the audience aware of what is happening throughout through the voice over of the main subject used. Some conventions that have been used are interview like discussions which include of a emotional conversation (24.25) and actuality footage. The impact this has on the viewers overall is effective as they may be able to relate to the situation within the documentary.

'Conventions of a News Package'

In this assignment I will be analysing a news report by explaining how and why conventions are used throughout. The conventions listed are field reporters, links to studio, mode of address to viewer, interviewing experts and witnesses, report structure and actuality footage.

Field Reporters:
Field reporters is when a reporter heads to a specific location which is relevant to the story line and broadcast information, in all occasions this is done live. At (0.01) we can see a field reporter at the scene of the event which is based on the royal baby being born. Throughout the news broadcast we see varied amount of field reporters which consists of both males and females, as the level of involvement in the story was colossal based on the event being one of the biggest within the UK. The different choice of presenters creates an impact based on the audience it is targeted too as this is shown by the gender, age and ethnicity. We can see at (31.28) the presenter used is White British in order to relate to the countries original background allows them to engage the members of public that might be effected or interested in the event. The clothing worn by each of the individual presenters are smart formal to represent the professional nature of the show as we can see this at (1.12.56) blazers, dresses and ties are worn to inform the audience on the type of event they are reporting. The graphics used within the news broadcast are consistent and current as it follows what the presenters are saying as well as adding information to educate the audience what is happening with the Duke, Duchess and baby. At (0.03) we can see in bold 'breaking news' as this creates suspense, throughout the report the viewers are consonantly updated with what is going on as it is live this impacts the audience through realism and as well as it making them feel as if they are there based on the joyful event.
Links to Studio:
Links to studio is the communication between the presenter within the studio and the field reporter is normally done live and is directly reported from the location relating to the story line as this creates realism within the report. We can see this at (2.00) where the field reporter is introduced however no package is used as the cutaways are limited. This impacts the audience through the basic camera language as it is direct allowing the field reporter to engage the viewers more effectively as we can see at (2.10-3.00) the individual camera used is quite static and is hand held most of the time but reacts when the reporter shows and informs the audience with what is going on at (2.32). The broadcast the field report is reporting is done live as this adds an dramatic feel, depending on the topic the reporter is normally a slight distance away from the location to capture the overall event and what is going on.

Mode of Address to Viewer:
Mode of address to viewer sets the mood based on how the media talks to the audience, in this case it can vary from the tone of voice, accent, language complexity, fact provider and analysing expert.
The language complexity in this report is straight forwards as it allows an varied target audience to also acknowledge and understand what is going on too. This is seen straight away within the first (0.30) seconds as wording and complexity is fairly simple however is presented formally and professionally. Due to it being a news broadcast the tone of voice is very clear in order to engage the audience through the pace used to ensure the information is being  delivered correctly, we can see this at (0.10). The accent of the presenter is unknown as this suggest her voice is steady and clear benefiting the viewers as they are able to understand what is being said. Throughout the report we see a range of fact providers educating the audience on what plans are in place for the future king as we can see at (0.21) rather than experts stating their opinion.
Interviewing Experts and Witnesses:
Interviewing experts and witnesses is used to help paint a picture on how an event happened or getting individuals opinions on the situation. The camera technique used varies from medium close ups to two shots in order capture both interviewer and interviewee in this case with an expert at (1.30). The location of the interview between them is at the prime scene of the story where the birth took place at St. Marys hospital, this impacts the audience based on the relevant nature of the setting as it is realistic. The status of the interviewees are reasonably average as they are relevant to the story as they specialise in the royal family but aren't essential, however the graphics used does not have any information on to inform the audience of what his title is apart from the verbal introduction we see at (0.23) this may impact the viewer by their first impressions that the interviewee is not extremely important but is relevant to the report.
Report Structure:
Report structure is how the broadcast is laid out in order to engage the viewers as this can range from archive footage, signing in and out, cutaways and interviews. The broadcast structure on the royal baby has an minimum amount of archive footage as we can see both Duke and Duchess taking a stroll and Princess Diana at (48.18). The introduction to the show includes of the presenter signing in and signing out towards the end to wrap up the report at (0.01). Impacting the audience through the use of informing the audience who they are has an effect towards the host suggesting that they are directly telling the viewers who they are which is realistic. The cutaways and pieces to the camera are frequent as if the audience is directly their by talking to the camera at eye level. Various cutaways and nodding are used to within an interview to show that they are paying attention as well as being live from an outside broadcast.
Actuality Footage:
Actuality footage is footage taken there and then as archive is also factual but not current. We can see at (8.25) actuality footage is used to help engage the audience through the overall atmosphere presented within the report. As the reasons for using this source also helps to add emotion and realism of the event taking place. The amount of the actuality footage used is the entire clip presented through audio as it is explained clearly. The contextualisation is relevant based on the agenda which we can see at (17.40) the shots allows the audience to see what is going on at Buckingham palace. Impacting the viewers through suspense and excitement as the frame arrivals for the members of public to view.

Docu Drama:
Docu drama is a television or film dramatisation of event based on facts and not re-enactments. Some examples I have for documentary drama is Titanic, Ali and Diana.
Titanic:
In this clip of 'Titanic' it is a good example of a documentary drama due to the facts seen within the film that we know is based on true events. For example where the ship sinks at (2.15.50) it focuses what the story line is based on by the event that had taken place in April 14th 1912. However some parts of the film are not exactly accurate as the main characters Rose and Jack (45.42) are fictional and are used for entertainment purposes only. The camera angles used range from lots of hand held and close ups to gain the realism effect of being there (realistic). This manages to impact the audience through the sympathy as it connects to the audience with the mood given in order to connect rather than using basic camera techniques. At (3.40) we see the sunken ship directly through the angles and movement as if we are there.

The footage within each soap is all factual as it recorded live and not scripted. The impact that the docu soap has on the audience is effective through the nature of what occurs in the clip as it may make some viewers queasy, as it engages there attention. With many of the documentary soaps we sometimes see follows ups on how the characters have got on in order for the audience to be updated.
